Making Cushions Instructions
Everyone
needs a cushion ! It is something to cuddle during that scary moment
in a film, or something to thump when the going gets tough and it can
be hurled at your errant partner without causing too much damage.
Cushions can be either functional or decorative and can be used in
the bedroom as well as the living areas. They can be made to contrast,
co-ordinate or match the rest of your soft furnishings.
I recommend using cushion pads rather than filling. They come in a
range of sizes and come filled with either feathers (dry clean only)
or polyester (washable).
On these pages you will find free illustrated instructions on how
to sew and make all of the following cushions.
- These large floor cushions, or Beanbags,
are ideal for children and grown ups alike, not to mention the family
pet. Filled with polystyrene balls, beanbags are both warm and comfortable
as they mould to your shape. As an alternative, they can be filled
with foam chippings but these tend to make the beanbag lumpy.
- A Box
or Welted Cushion is used mainly for seating on chairs or window
seats where more depth is required. To achieve this, side sections
or welts are added between the top and bottom cushion pieces. They
can be made in a range of fabrics to match, contrast or co-ordinate
with your existing soft furnishings.
- Cathedral
Window is a layered patchwork that gives a 3D effect. Although
time consuming, it is relatively easy to do even if you have a minimal
amount of sewing experience. For the best results use a plain coloured
background fabric with either a contrasting colour or patterned fabric
for the "windows".
- Adding Piping
to a Simple Cushion gives a more defined edge to enhance the shape
and define the edges. It can match, contrast or co-ordinate with the
main cushion fabric. If a patterned fabric is used make sure a suitable
part of the pattern is positioned in the centre of the cushion.
- Simple
Cushions can be made in all weights of fabric from lightweight
cottons to heavyweight velvets.
They can be made to match, contrast or coordinate with your soft furnishings,
be left plain or enhanced by adding lace, braid or fringing.
- A Zip
is usually added to a Cushion Cover to enable it to be easily
removed for cleaning. This is especially useful when using feather
filled cushion pads.
The zip can be fitted into the side seam of the cushion pad, making
the cushion reversible, or across the centre of the back of the cushion
cover in which case the cushion can only be used one way up.
