Rosettes
are a flower shape trimming made from a length of light to medium weight
fabric which is gathered along one edge.
They can be made as a single layer or as a double rosette with 2 layers in different sizes and colours.
However, double layered rosettes are only suitable for lightweight fabric.
A covered button is stitched in the centre to cover the raw edges.
Suggested Sizes and Fabric Quantities:
Small rosette, 2" (5 cms) diameter needs a strip of fabric 5" (12.5 cms) wide by approximately 12" (30 cms) long.
Medium rosette, 3" (7.5 cms) diameter needs a strip of fabric 7" (17.5 cms) wide by approximately 18" (45 cms) long.
Large rosette, 4" (10 cms) diameter needs a strip of fabric 9" (22.5 cms) wide by approximately 24" (60 cms) long.
However, the length of the strip can be increased for a fuller rosette.
Requirements:
Light to medium weight fabric.
Matching strong thread.
1 cover button, approximately 0.75" (18 mm) in diameter.
1 flat button, approximately 0.75" (18 mm) in diameter.
Making a Rosette:
- Cut 1 strip of fabric to the required size.
- Fold it in half lengthways, right sides together, pin and stitch the short sides together, 0.5" (12 mm) in from the raw edges to make a ring. Press the seam open.
- Fold the fabric in half widths ways, wrong sides together, and press.
Using
a strong thread, work 2 lines of running stitches through both thicknesses,
0.5" (12 mm) down from the top raw edges. For a gathered look,
make small stitches of approximately 0.25" (6 mm) and for a more
pleated look, work longer stitches of approximately 0.5" (12
mm).- Pull up the gathering threads from both ends to gather one edge tightly into the centre of the rosette, taking the raw edges towards the back. Secure the ends of the thread firmly and adjust the gathers or pleats evenly.
- Cover the button.
- Oversew the cover button onto the centre of the rosette to cover the raw edges. Take the stitches through the shank on the covered button, through the fabric and through the flat button at the back of the rosette, pulling the thread tightly to secure both buttons.
