Making a Throwover Bedspread Instructions
This
is the simplest of bedcovers and can be made in variety of fabrics from
lightweight cottons to heavy quilted. They can be made to match, co-ordinate
or contrast with your colour scheme.
A throwover bedspread is a rectangle of fabric, which can be lined,
that drapes over the whole bed down to the floor or can be tucked under
the mattress of beds with decorative ends. Extra fabric is added at
the top of the bed to allow for the height of the pillows. The bottom
corners are rounded to stop the fabric trailing on the floor.
When more than one width of fabric is required it is essential that
a full width is placed in the centre and part widths added equally at
each side.
Fringing can be added to the sides and bottom hems for added decoration.

Requirements:
Fabric of your choice.
Lining, if required.
Matching thread.
Fringing (if required) enough for the sides and bottom edge of the
bedspread.
Measuring for a Throwover Bedspread:
Measure
the width (W) from the floor, up over the bed and down the other side
to the floor.
- Measure the length (L) from the mattress at the head of the bed,
up over the pillows, down the length of the bed and down to the floor
at the foot of the bed.
- Measure the width over the pillows (PW) from the floor, up over
the pillows and down the other side to the floor. This is the overall
width of the bedspread.
- For unlined bedspreads, add 4" (10 cms) to all 3 measurements
for the hems and an additional 0.5" (12 mm) where widths need
to be joined.
- For lined bedspreads, add 1" (2.5 cms) to all 3 measurements
for the seam allowance and an additional 1" (2.5 cms) where widths
need to be joined.
- If fringing is to be added to the sides and bottom edges then deduct
the width of the fringing from these measurements.
Cutting Out:
Cut
widths of fabric to the required length, adding extra for pattern
matching if necessary.
- Join the widths together, using a French seam for unlined, and flat
seam for lined bedspreads taking 0.5" (12 mm) seam allowance.
- On the side edges measure 25" (64 cms) (A) and 30" (76
cms) (B) down from the top corner and mark both with a pin.
- At the 30" (76 cms) mark, measure (PW minus W) divided by 2,
in from the raw edge and mark (C). Draw a line from the mark (C) down
the length of the bedspread to the bottom edge, making sure it is
parallel to the side edge.
- Mark a line from point (A) to (C).
Cut
out both the side sections.
- To round the bottom corners, fold the bedspread in half lengthways.
- At the bottom corner measure in from each side, and mark a distance
equal to the height of the bed + the seam/hem allowance.
- Draw a quarter circle at this point and cut through all the layers.
- Repeat steps 1 to 9 for the lining where applicable.
Making an Unlined Bedspread:
- Turn up a double 1" (2.5 cms) hem on all sides mitring the corners
at the top, easing the extra fabric around the curves and slipstitch.
- If required, backstitch the fringing onto the right side of the
hem on the sides and bottom of the bedspread, turning under 1"
(2.5 cms) at each end to neaten.
Making a Lined Bedspread:
- Place the fabric and lining, right sides together and pin around
all the edges.
- Stitch around all 4 sides of the bedspread 0.5" (12 mm) in
from the raw edges leaving a 20" (50 cms) opening at the centre
of the bottom edge for turning.
- Clip the seam allowance around the corners.
- Turn right side out and press.
- Turn in the seam allowance in line with the rest of the seam and
slipstitch across the opening.
- If required, backstitch the fringing to the right side of the hem
on the sides and bottom of the bedspread, turning under 1" (2.5
cms) at each end to neaten.
